Description
Underrated 1796 Eagle
1796 $10 AU 53 NGC. B. 1-A, the only known dies, R.5. In addition to having a lower original mintage, the second-year 1796 (4,146 pieces produced) was not saved as widely as the 1795 (5,583 pieces produced). As such, the former issue is twice as rare as the 1795 in all grades. This important AU specimen is tinged in orange-gold highlights with deeply set, green-gold undertones. The strike is well balanced and bold, the wear is light and confined to only the highest points of the design. The number of small abrasions is note excessive for a circulated gold coin of this size.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# BFYM, PCGS# 8554, GSID# 9342)
Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
Weight: 17.50 grams
