Description

Important Choice Uncirculated 1920-S Saint-Gaudens

1920-S $20 MS64 NGC. In an average year, the elusive, heavily melted 1920-S Twenty makes a handful of auction appearances in lightly circulated condition, those few pieces having entered commerce for a few years and subsequently having survived the gold recall of the 1930s. While not the extraordinary rarity in Uncirculated condition that it was a generation ago, this issue still compares favorably with several of the elites of the Saint-Gaudens series in Mint State. Even after the release of a small group of coins from European banks during this time frame, Choice pieces are extremely rare and Gems almost non-existent. This high grade example has the soft, frosted luster expected of Uncirculated survivors and displays blushes of reddish patina over both sides in addition to a hint of steel-blue at the margins. Surface marks are generally modest, with a shallow, vertical blemish to the right of Liberty's head being mentioned more for future attribution than as a particular distraction. An important offering for the quality-conscious 20th century gold specialist. Population: 10 in 64, 1 finer (10/02).
