Description

Fabled 1921 Double Eagle Rarity, MS62 PCGS

1921 $20 MS62 PCGS. The 1921 is one of the five or six rarest dates in the entire Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series, this despite a not especially low mintage of 528,500 pieces. The '21-P, however, is the premier condition rarity in this series, and only the 1920-S can rival it for that honor. Unlike many other issues of this type that saw extensive melting, the 1921 is typically offered in circulated grades. Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated coins are the norm among what few examples are extant in today's hobby. Even when a Mint State example is offered it is apt to grade no finer than MS60(this per David Akers, 1988, who also states that "in MS-63 or higher grade this issue is all but impossible to obtain").
We cannot overstate the importance of the present MS62 representative. It is the first 1921 Double Eagle at this grade level that we have offered since our Philadelphia 2000 Signature Sale. Whereas most examples of this date are frosty in luster quality, this coin has more of a satiny sheen. The otherwise green-gold color yields to golden-rose highlights in select areas around the reverse eagle. Well struck, as befits the issue, with overall bold definition. There are a few abrasions here and there, most of which are located in the right obverse field, but the surfaces appear uncommonly smooth for a Double Eagle at the MS62 level. The hairline die cracks that often join the letters in LIBERTY are not present on this coin, but there is a reverse die break (as struck, and not uncommon for the type) through the eagle's beak. One of numerous important Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles that we are offering in this sale, and a coin that would fit nicely into any advanced collection of certified U.S. gold.
