Description
Brilliant MS62 1884-S Silver Dollar
1884-S $1 MS62 PCGS. CAC. The 1884-S Morgan dollar is the first S-mint issue in the series that is elusive in any Mint State grade. The 1878-S through 1882-S dollars are plentiful in all grades, and many tens of thousands exist in Mint State. The 1883-S is somewhat elusive in Mint State, but even for that issue Bowers estimates that a few thousand exist in Mint State from MS63 and upward. But the 1884-S is an "abnormal" issue, in that most of the 3.2 million coins produced apparently entered circulation. Bowers estimates that only a few hundred Mint State 1884-S dollars exist in MS63 and finer, including certified and raw coins. Only three PCGS-certified pieces are in the "Gem or finer" category.
The present coin, graded MS62, is one of 86 so certified at PCGS, with 53 finer (9/09). The surfaces on both sides are brilliant silver-white, with copious cartwheel luster despite the numerous ticks on the devices and in the fields that prevent a higher grade. Minor strike weakness appears on the high points of both sides, but plenty of appeal remains for the many series aficionados who prefer their coins brilliant.(Registry values: P9, N2998)
