Description:

Highly Lustrous MS66 1903-S Dollar

1903-S $1 MS66 NGC. A beautiful example of this sought-after date. The 1903-S is known to be one of the rarest silver dollars in Mint State. Q. David Bowers estimated that only 400-800 examples are extant at the MS65 and above level. The mintage of 1.2 million pieces is fairly small for a Morgan dollar. It is likely that hundreds of thousands of 1903-S dollars were melted under the 1918 Pittman Act. They were not given out in the 1962-1964 Treasury release in any large quantity. Prooflike coins are prohibitively rare so even the most discriminating collector will be glad to obtain a Premium Gem example of this date.
This breathtaking coin displays heather and gray toning over satiny, lustrous fields, and there are splashes of blue near the rims. The coin is well struck, with only a little softness on the eagle's feathers. The fields are free of distractions, with none visible to the unaided eye. Census: 8 in 66, 1 finer (7/08).(Registry values: P7, N4719) (#7288)
