Lovely MS66 Red 1914-S Cent
1914-S 1C MS66 Red PCGS. While the 1914-S cent is not so famous as its D-mint counterpart, this was not always the case. In the 1930s, when interest in coin collecting flourished and Lincoln cent collecting in particular was widespread, the 1914-S was considered an equal or superior to the 1914-D in high grades. Though emphasis on overall rarity has diminished the luster of the 1914-S somewhat, the Registry collecting phenomenon has led to a renaissance for this San Francisco issue and greater awareness of its notable condition rarity.The 1914-S cent is one of several issues for which strike and fresh color do not go hand in hand. In his Guide Book of Lincoln Cents, Q. David Bowers highlights the challenging nature of the issue: "MS-65 RD coins with original [italics his] color are very difficult to locate, especially if well struck. This is one of many early Lincoln cents where you, as a connoisseur and cherrypicker, can have a great advantage--but patience is needed ..."
For the Lincoln cent collector, one's choice of 1914-S cent is an important benchmark of numismatic taste, and Jack Lee's example reflects his noteworthy discernment. Though the vast majority of survivors show some deficiency relating to the strike-color trade-off, the present piece has attractive copper-orange and wheat surfaces that offer strong luster and an aura of originality. The strike is above-average, and the fields are remarkably well-preserved. With just three MS66 Red coins known to PCGS and none finer (10/08), this Red Premium Gem offers a remarkable opportunity for the Lincoln cent connoisseur.
