Notable 1915-S Cent, MS66 Red

1915-S 1C MS66 Red PCGS. Ex: Tom Mershon Collection, Joshua and Ally Walsh. The San Francisco Mint's output in 1915 ran the full span of coinage denominations known to that time, from the majestic round and octagonal fifty dollar gold pieces struck for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition to the more humble cent. It is interesting to note that after the 1915 feat, no other Mint would cover that much of a span until 1986, when the American Eagle gold bullion coin series saw another coin with a fifty dollar face value struck.The 1915-S is available in most grades with some persistence, though acquiring the best survivors comes only with substantial time and money spent. The issue has some pitfalls, as noted by Q. David Bowers in his Guide Book of Lincoln Cents; among them, high-end examples "are usually toned and sometimes blotchy," and while a number of well-defined pieces exist, "there are many exceptions." Bowers also cautions that the bronze alloy used to create this issue toned more quickly than usual, making original Red coins elusive.
On this coin, all legends are bold, as well as the date and mintmark, unlike the vast majority of branch mint examples from the teens and twenties. Orange-gold, glowing matte-like surfaces complement the exceptional strike on this choice and elusive S-mint rarity. A couple of toning flecks are noted with a glass near the back of Lincoln's coat, as are a couple of reverse ticks, but none of these flaws diminish the astounding overall quality of this piece, a beautiful Premium Gem with an impeccable pedigree. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (10/08).
