Description:

Fantastic Red Gem 1925-S Cent, Ex: Walsh

1925-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. Ex: Joshua and Ally Walsh. The 1925-S is among the most challenging Lincoln cent issues for the high-end enthusiast, with substantial trouble-spots at both color (even the least toned coins are substantially darker than Red coins from other issues) and strike (the Mints were at the height of their days of thrift, sacrificing quality in the name of efficiency). In his Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents, David Lange lays out his view: "Mint State specimens, while not rare, are usually of mediocre quality. Quite a number survive with a moderate amount of original red color, yet these are almost invariably poor strikes."
Lange later notes that " ... anything even approaching the gem category is of the highest rarity." Interestingly, by the standards of other references, Lange's assessment is charitable; Q. David Bowers once stated that a Red Gem representative with full details would make for "the find of the year."
As is the norm for the handful of high-grade representatives known, this elusive Gem example displays characteristic rich reddish-orange color. The strike is far superior to the typical Uncirculated survivor, being almost fully defined on the highpoints of the portrait and displaying strong peripheral lettering. Even the wheat stalks are razor-sharp. A tiny blemish on Lincoln's cheek and another just above the 1 of the date are mentioned as pedigree markers. Seldom offered in this lofty grade, and available for the first time with two of the most distinguished pedigrees in Lincoln cent collecting. Population: 10 in 65 Red, 0 finer (10/08).
From The Jack Lee Estate Lincoln Cent Registry Set.(Registry values: N4719) (#2566)
