Description:

The Pittman 1855-O Double Eagle, XF40

1855-O $20 XF40 NGC. The New Orleans Mint produced a modest 8,000 double eagles in 1855, and survivors are few and far between in any grade. Dave Bowers comments in A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins: "The 1855-O, sandwiched between the classic rarities 1854-O and 1856-O, is very hard to find in any grade. Fewer than a hundred pieces are believed to exist, mostly VF and EF, these grades holding for most of the great 'name' collections formed over the years."
Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth comment similarly in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933: "The rarity of the 1855-O double eagle is often overshadowed by the 1854-O and 1856-O issues. There are fewer than 100 examples known for the date in all grades. This is especially important considering the fact that double eagles are one of the most popular U.S. coins."
David Akers conservatively graded this piece Very Fine in the Pittman catalog, although smooth surfaces and traces of luster suggest the higher XF40 grade that NGC has assigned. Both sides exhibit light orange-gold with hints of green, and with minor marks that are typical of these large gold pieces. In addition, there is a small rim nick at 5 o'clock, and a small planchet depression below the date, the latter as made. The opportunity to acquire an example of the 1855-O double eagle in any grade should be given serious consideration, as examples appear on the market infrequently.
Ex: Lester Merkin (10/1966), lot 374; John Jay Pittman (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 1131.
