Although the consignor's agreement allows a reserve on this lot, the deadline for submitting such a reserve has elapsed. If consignor submits a reserve post-deadline and the item fails to meet that reserve, we may charge the consignor a higher reserve fee.

Important 1879-O Double Eagle, VF35
1879-O $20 VF35 PCGS. Housed in a green-label PCGS holder. The only With Motto New Orleans Mint double eagle issue, the 1879-O is also the final issue of the denomination from the southern branch mint. After an eighteen year hiatus caused by the Civil War, the New Orleans Mint resumed production in 1879, primarily to strike silver dollars. Just 2,325 double eagles were struck, only a fraction of which have survived. There are probably only about 100 to 150 examples surviving today. The mintage is the second lowest of any New Orleans double eagle, behind the 1856-O, although it is not the second rarest, an honor reserved for the 1854-O.The present coin has noticeable luster for the grade, and the reverse in particular has rich details. Both sides exhibit outstanding green-gold surfaces. Although moderately abraded, there are no contact marks that merit individual notice. Like most 1879-O double eagles, this piece entered circulation soon after it was struck. Typical examples of the date grade VF or XF, like this piece, but unlike the present specimen, many are harshly cleaned, such as the Smithsonian Institution specimen. Many others show extensive bagmarks, also unlike the present coin with its pleasing surfaces.
