Minimum Bid

Bid increments determine the lowest amount you may bid on a particular lot. Normally, bids must be at least one bidding increment over the current bid. However, podium, fax, phone and mail bidders submit bids at various times without knowing the current bid and must be on-increment or at a half increment (called a cut bid). Any podium, fax, phone, or mail bids that do not conform to a full or half increment will be rounded up or down to the nearest full or half increment. However, for Internet bids, these increments only apply to the current bid. Internet bids greater than one increment over the current bid can be any whole dollar amount. It is possible under several circumstances for winning bids to be between increments, sometimes only $1 above the previous increment.

Number of Bidders

This number represents the number of individual bidders prior to the close of Internet bidding on each lot. An individual who bids more than once is still counted only once. During the live session, only the winning bidder is included in this number, although detailed records are kept of all forms of bids.

Rare 1969-S Doubled Die Cent, MS63 Brown


1969-S 1C Doubled Die MS63 Brown NGC. Breen-2252, FS-101. The present era of close examination of all numismatic items has led to the discovery of many important varieties. However, the 1969-S Doubled Die was discovered many years ago in 1970, only a few months after the coins were struck. Few have been discovered since that time, and the variety remains a major rarity in the modern Lincoln cent theater.
Close examination of the obverse reveals substantial rotated doubling that is most obvious at the date and all of the letters. Around the entire circumference, the spread is wider toward the rim, and is every bit as prominently doubled as the 1955 Doubled Die cent. The most important feature to notice is the single, undoubled mintmark. At the time the dies were made, mintmarks were still punched into individual dies by hand after the hubbing process that created the doubled die. This is extremely important for authentication, as the 1969-S Lincoln cent is commonly seen with sharp strike doubling that is very similar in appearance to the doubled die, except the strike doubled pieces also have a doubled mintmark.
Current population data shows that NGC and PCGS have certified a total of 36 submissions, undoubtedly including some resubmissions. The finest include two MS64 Red, one MS64 Red and Brown, four MS63 Red, and three MS63 Brown, the latter including this piece. It is a boldly struck, satiny olive-brown example with only a few marks on each side. Perhaps a lack of cartwheel luster accounts for the limited grade, but the overall appearance is excellent.
