Description:

Coveted Near-Mint 1969-S Doubled Die Cent

1969-S 1C Doubled Die Obverse AU58 PCGS. Breen-2252, FS-101. The 1969-S doubled die cent is a variety of sufficient rarity that knowledge of authentic pieces' diagnostics has been essential from the start. In his "Detecting Counterfeits" column for the April 1, 1996 edition of Coin World, Michael Fahey pointed out an interesting set of diagnostics. Since all known 1969-S doubled die cents come from the same die pair, not just the same obverse die, the reverse can offer valuable clues as well:

"Before being placed into service, the reverse die was rather harshly polished, leaving a number of strong die polish lines.
Every genuine 1969-S Doubled Die cent I have seen has exhibited these raised lines, even the circulated specimens. The most easily seen are the two lines at the E of UNITED, the line through the M of AMERICA, and the lines that extend down from the lower edges of the R and I of AMERICA."

If the Mint worker who did the polishing on that die did such a poor job, if said worker handled the obverse, it is little wonder that the doubling, prominent as it is, went unnoticed.
The present example, primarily chocolate-brown, is temptingly close to a Mint State designation, but examination under a light reveals slightly deeper color on the high points that turns bright copper-gold when tilted. This effect is pleasing rather than a distraction. A handful of stray marks scattered on each side have little influence on the visual appeal. In sum, a highly desirable representative of this immensely challenging and increasingly popular Guide Book variant. Population: 7 in 58, 4 finer (11/08).(Registry values: P1) (#2921)
