Extraordinary 1815 Quarter, B-1, MS67
The Finest Known Example
1815 25C MS67 NGC. B-1, R.1. Browning-Breen Die State II. Only one variety is known of this important date. The mintage comprised 69,232 pieces delivered Dec. 16, 1815 per warrant #732, and 20,003 coins delivered Jan. 10, 1816 per warrant #733, for a total of 89,235 pieces. According to Steve Tompkins in the 2008 Early United States Quarters, all coins in the first warrant were delivered to the Planters Bank in New Orleans. Tompkins goes on to say that: "The coins contained in warrant 733 were most likely delivered to the Bank of the United States in Philadelphia." The latter point is questionable, as the First Bank of the United States ceased operation in 1811 when Congress refused to renew its charter. The Second Bank of the United States was chartered by Congress only in early 1816. Were the warrant 733 quarters delivered to some other Philadelphia bank, perhaps the Bank of Pennsylvania or the Bank of Philadelphia?This is the finest example known of this popular and widely collected date. As a Die State II coin, the fields show evidence of die clashing. However, aside from light clash marks, the impeccably preserved surfaces reveal virtually nothing to interrupt the flow of the thick, frosted mint luster that liberally covers each side. Both obverse and reverse are deeply patinated, with gray, gold, and emerald-green centers surrounded by deep scarlet-gray, forest-green, and gunmetal-blue toning around the margins. The striking definition is strong throughout, with even pressure applied to all the design elements. An extraordinary coin and a singular opportunity for the type or date collector. Census: 1 in 67, 0 finer (4/09).
