Description:
Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot, 33.85 Ounces
Recovered from the S.S. Central America
(1855-57) Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot. Dimensions 53 mm x 43 mm x 28 mm. CAGB-450. Top face reads from top to bottom: NO (number abbreviation with two diagonal lines below the "O") 546 / 33.85 OZ / 891 FINE / $623.46. A turn to the left, and the incuse KELLOGG / & / HUMBERT / ASSAYERS imprint is stamped, oriented to the long side. Another left turn, and the serial number is repeated. Two "corner cuts" directly opposed to one another, plus a third corner that looks like it has a corner cut at first glance, though the displaced metal around it suggests that the corner was bumped and not cut.This ingot has multiple distinctive features, both obvious and not. On the top face, the number punches are not regular; in fact, they border on the haphazard. This is most notable at "891 FINE", where the number 8 starts more than a quarter of the way from the ingot's left border, the 9 is tilted left and low relative to the 8, and the 1 crowds the word FINE; that word barely fits in the space provided.
Less readily apparent but highly intriguing is an apparent impression from a coin, which appears on the side a right turn from the top face. A partial arc from a coin's rim and reeding is plain, as is part of a letter "T". Given the cargo of the S.S. Central America, a double eagle is the most likely source of the impression, though this cannot be determined with certainty. Still, the impression is an unexpected but welcome reminder of where this ingot has spent most of its existence: at the bottom of the ocean, part of a jumble of priceless golden cargo.
This medium-sized ingot is generally bright yellow-gold with only small areas of encrustation. Comes with a PSA/DNA (Collectors Universe) certificate of authenticity picturing the ingot and providing basic information such as dimensions and serial number. (#10357)
