Description:

Carlos III (1759-88) gold 8 Escudos 1772-S CF, KM409.2, Cayon-12836, MS64 NGC, a fully struck and superb looking UNC with intense brilliance, gorgeous and mellow gold toning over semi-prooflike surfaces, all set within exceptionally bold, deeply struck, broad denticles -- which offset the designs dramatically, giving them a jewel-like quality. All in all, a wonderful piece from the Seville mint showing the king in his armor, bust facing right, while the reverse features the classic crowned arms within the Order of the Golden Fleece (for centuries, the badge of authority, a golden chain worn by the monarch, normally at official state functions). The moneyers' initials ("CF") are intriguing abbreviations, standing for Carlos Jimenez Almaraz and Francisco Lopez Amisa. How much more "Spanish" can a coin be than this marvelous, large gold piece, struck like a medal? Certainly worth many strong bids from those who appreciate what this is -- one of the very finest known! Ex: Rarcoa, April 1986.
From the Deb-Ann Collection.
