Description:

Exceedingly Rare 1969-S Lincoln Cent, Doubled Die Obverse, MS62 Brown PCGS

1969-S 1C Doubled Die MS62 Brown PCGS. FS-028. Although not as well known as the 1972/72 Doubled Die, the 1969-S Doubled Die is equally as dramatic from a visual standpoint, and appreciably rarer in all grades. Lange (1996) states that no more than 15-20 examples of this error are extant out of a possible mintage of 100 pieces. Under a loupe, one can see widely spaced doubling on the letters in LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, as well as the digits in the date. There are a few small abrasions on the upper obverse, but just two or three minute nicks on the reverse, causing the assigned grade of MS62 to seem perhaps a bit on the conservative side, but even at the current grade level it is one of the half-dozen finest known examples. The color scheme on each side of the piece is predominantly a glossy tobacco-brown, with noticeable amounts of orange-red mint luster in the more protected areas near the devices, especially on the reverse. Mint State representatives of this error appear at auction with great infrequency, making this sale an important opportunity for Lincoln cent error specialists. (#2921) (#2921)
