Description:

Very Rare 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Cent

1969-S 1C Doubled Die Obverse MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. While both the 1955 and 1972 Doubled Die Lincoln Cents are perennial favorites among students of the series, its 1969-S counterpart has been all but overlooked in recent decades. Despite dramatic doubling on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST, this error suffered from the negative press that surrounded several counterfeit P-mint cents of the same year. Negative press cannot, however, disguise the fact that this error is legitimately rare in all levels of preservation. Since fewer than 20 examples are believed to exist today, numismatic scholars speculate that no more than 100 pieces were produced in the year of issue.
The present Mint State survivor displays predominantly orange-red surfaces with pale blue-gray overtones on the obverse. All features are boldly defined and the doubling is readily evident to the naked eye. Needless to say, only a carefully considered bid will win this piece for an advanced assembly of Lincoln Cents.(#2922) (Registry values: P1) (#2922)
