Description:

High Quality 1811 Cohen-2 Half Cent

1811 1/2 C C-2, B-2, R.2. Die State 3--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Unc Details. AU50 EAC. Close date, star 13 to border; Berry centered below A2. This is the Breen Plate Coin for the variety (enlarged), the Manley Plate Coin for the variety (similarly enlarged), and also the Manley Plate Coin for State 3 in his reference. The obverse has clash marks behind the lower curls and above 11 in the date. Prominent die striations and die scratches are visible on the reverse, and these seem consistent throughout the entire life of this die, which is used for both varieties of the date. In addition to these, a fine die scratch extends from the left end of the dash, diagonally up to the leaf tip below C in CENT. This die scratch can be seen on all three high-grade Reiver 1811 Half Cents. Walter Breen, however, described this coin as a late die state (Breen Die State V) of the 1811 C-2 die marriage. This example has a fine die crack from the top of the F in OF to the border between F and A.
A splendid example even though it has been cleaned and recolored, and one of very few examples of this variety that has even a claim to being Mint State. Sharply detailed with medium brown color on the obverse and lighter olive on the reverse. Walter Breen recorded this as one of three examples that he described as AU, and neither of the other two had a pedigree more recent than 1948. The only other high grade examples that have recently appeared are the Norweb and Eliasberg coins, and these two could very possibly be the examples mentioned by Breen from earlier sales. Breen Die State IV.
Ex: Ellis Robison Collection (Stack's, 2/1982), lot 345; R. Tettenhorst (6/6/1984). Envelope Included.(Registry values: P7) (#1135)
