Description:

Important Census Level 1793 S-16 Cent

1793 1C Liberty Cap. S-16, B-19, R.6--Environmental Damage--NCS. VF Details. VG10 EAC. Del Bland graded this a conservative VG7 for the Breen Cent Encyclopedia, however, it is our belief that an EAC grade of VG10 is more in line with the true quality. Either grade places it within the Condition Census of the top six examples, either tied for sixth finest as VG7, or tied for third finest as VG10. Regardless of its rank, this is a very rare variety and an important opportunity for the advanced collector. Only about 20 examples of this die marriage are known in all grades. The obverse has intermingled tan, dark brown, and steel, while the reverse is mostly olive-brown in color. Minor porosity and surface encrustation are noted, but neither are severe. A line-like planchet lamination is visible in the right obverse field with another from the right side of the reverse to the top interior of the wreath. A rim flaw at the upper reverse appears to be as struck. In Superior's catalog of the Ruby Collection, it was noted that this specimen is ex Howard R. Newcomb.
Ex: Charles M. Williams (Numismatic Gallery, 11/1950), lot 14A; Christian M. Petersen; Dr. Charles Ruby (Superior, 2/10/1975), lot 16; Denis W. Loring. Envelope Included.(Registry values: N7079) (#1359)
