Description:

St. Oswald Pedigreed 1794 S-42 Cent

1794 1C Head of 1794. S-42, B-29, Low R.4. AU58 NGC. AU50 EAC. This example which was sold by the London firm of Christie, Manson, & Woods in 1964, was part of their St. Oswald Collection offering, supposedly with a pedigree dating back to the time these coins were struck. More recently, however, that pedigree has been questioned. Regardless, this is a solid Condition Census example, tied for second finest known behind a solitary Mint State coin, according to Del Bland. Struck from perfect dies without any evidence of the clash marks that appear on the obverse in later die states. Splendid chocolate-brown is intermingled with lighter tan and traces of mahogany. It is a well-centered example with full obverse and reverse borders. Tiny surface marks at the lower left obverse, at a location of slightly weaker striking pressure, are left over from the original planchet. This is an outstanding example that will be a treat for the connoisseur.
Ex: St. Oswald Collection (Christie, Manson & Woods, 10/1964), lot 146; Edwin Shapiro (via Lester Merkin); C. Douglas Smith (1965); Alfred Bonard; C. Douglas Smith (10/31/1968). Envelope Included.(Registry values: P1) (#901374)
