Important Mint State 1836 Reeded Edge Half Dollar
1836 50C Reeded Edge MS63 NGC. Technically a pattern issue, however, the mintage of 1,200 coins and business strike production format suggest that this issue may have been intended for actual circulation. Indeed, many of the survivors are well worn. These coins were struck on the recently installed Thonnelier steam press, and they became the first steam coinage produced at the second United States Mint building. Incidentally, the very first Thonnelier press spent many years residing in Philadelphia's Franklin Institute, and today is located in the ANA Money Museum in Colorado Springs.This specimen is fully lustrous with soft, frosty surfaces beneath intermingled heather and champagne toning. Although the luster is a little subdued, the surfaces are excellent quality for the grade.(Registry values: N4719) (#6175)

We changed the way we image slabbed coins on February 1, 2010, in order to get a more accurate image of the coin. To get the sharper details and more accurate colors we have focused the lighting on the actual coin, which has caused the top of the holders to appear darker and milky. Please disregard the color of the holders when examining the images.
