Description:

Near-Mint 1860-D Gold Dollar, Mintage: 1,566 Pieces

1860-D G$1 AU58 PCGS. Variety 12-P. It is difficult to say that a coin with a mintage of only 1,566 pieces is overrated. But it does appear that a higher percentage of issue was set aside in (relatively) high grades than other Dahlonega coinage. At least half a dozen Mint State pieces are believed known today. At the AU58 level, this piece is just outside the Condition Census and tied with several other near-Mint coins. This issue is well known as having the softest strike of all D-mint gold dollars, and that is certainly clear on this coin. Also, Mint-made irregularities are frequently seen, and on this coin there are a couple of planchet flaws just behind and below the mouth of Liberty. The only other marks are a few small abrasions and planchet flakes in the center of the reverse. The fields are bright with light, even reddish color over each side.(Registry values: N4719) (#7556)

We changed the way we image slabbed coins on February 1, 2010, in order to get a more accurate image of the coin. To get the sharper details and more accurate colors we have focused the lighting on the actual coin, which has caused the top of the holders to appear darker and milky. Please disregard the color of the holders when examining the images.
