Description:

Splendid Uncirculated 1848-C Quarter Eagle

1848-C $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 10-F. In his reference Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint, Doug Winter mentions that 10-F obverse die is often seen heavily buckled, or sunken, which creates a wavy appearance on the obverse field and the bust truncation, as is the case on this example. The hair details are only partially visible, and most of the stars are flat. On the reverse, only the claws and the leg left of the shield show signs of weakness. This is unquestionably a Mint State coin with full and complete luster. There is no evidence of wear on either side. The fields have satiny, slightly reflective surfaces with considerable greenish-gold color. Given the appearance of this example, it would be easy to see how just the slightest wear on a similarly struck coin would simulate a much lower grade. Grading of these coins in general terms is as much an assessment of remaining luster and surface quality as it is existing design details. This is a splendid example and among the finer pieces known. Census: 7 in 61, 5 finer (1/06).(Registry values: P2) (#7750)

We changed the way we image slabbed coins on February 1, 2010, in order to get a more accurate image of the coin. To get the sharper details and more accurate colors we have focused the lighting on the actual coin, which has caused the top of the holders to appear darker and milky. Please disregard the color of the holders when examining the images.
