Description:

Very Scarce, Condition Census 1855-C Quarter Eagle

1855-C $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 16-I. The 1855-C is a very rare and highly respected Charlotte quarter eagle. Only 50-60 pieces are known out of the mintage of 3,677 coins. This is one of the finest pieces extant and is definitely in the upper Condition Census. In fact, the finest coin listed on Winter's most recent Condition Census is an "MS60 or better" coin. Only three other pieces have been so graded by PCGS and NGC (minus a resubmission or two?) with only two others in higher grade (1/06). This is certainly an attractive example that shows semi-reflective fields on each side. The striking definition is predictably weak, especially on the reverse, as this issue is generally known as the softest struck Charlotte quarter eagle from the 1850s. A few light abrasions are scattered across each side, the most notable located parallel to the eagle's right (facing) wing. Light reddish patina.(Registry values: P2) (#7775)

We changed the way we image slabbed coins on February 1, 2010, in order to get a more accurate image of the coin. To get the sharper details and more accurate colors we have focused the lighting on the actual coin, which has caused the top of the holders to appear darker and milky. Please disregard the color of the holders when examining the images.
