Description:

Handsome 1858-C Quarter Eagle

1858-C $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. Variety 18-J. Charlotte Mint quarter eagles tend to provide greater value than half eagles from the same branch mint. For example, the 1858-C quarter eagle has a mintage of 9,056 pieces, while the half eagle of the same date and mint has a production more than four times greater. Nonetheless, the 2006 Guide Book lists higher prices in each grade for the half eagle. The present piece offers consistent straw-gold color, and no marks are remotely worthy of discussion. The strike is generally strong, with some softness noted on the eagle's lower half and shield. A couple of planchet flaws, of mint origin, bookend the eagle's neck. Rare in all grades, the 1858-C becomes an important opportunity in Mint State condition.(Registry values: P2) (#7787)

We changed the way we image slabbed coins on February 1, 2010, in order to get a more accurate image of the coin. To get the sharper details and more accurate colors we have focused the lighting on the actual coin, which has caused the top of the holders to appear darker and milky. Please disregard the color of the holders when examining the images.
