Heritage to Auction Finest Known 1880-S $20 At Pittsburgh ANA
Dallas, Texas: The highest-graded certified 1880-S Double Eagle is being offered at Heritage's ANA Signature Auction, taking place in Pittsburgh August 18-21. Certified MS66 by NGC, this is the finest 1880-S $20 seen by either PCGS or NGC.
"This is an astonishingly beautiful coin," gushed Heritage Co-Chairman Jim Halperin. "Even ignoring that the 1880-S had a relatively large mintage for coins (of this era) with 836,000 pieces struck (the fourth scarcest of the thirty Type Three $20s from San Francisco), this is a singular example. Most examples are found in the AU53 to AU58 grade range, and a few lower grade Unc coins that appeared on the market almost ten years ago. When you consider its general rarity, to have survived in this lofty grade is miraculous! This coin is 'defined' by its extraordinary and atypically well preserved surfaces, which differ wonderfully from the normally encountered 1880-S twenty."
"This issue is normally found with significant bagmarks," continued Chief Cataloger Mark Van Winkle. "However, this coin is almost free from any abrasions of any size. I had to look very closely with a magnifier to locate even the tiniest imperfection. And, the strike is superb. The radials on the obverse stars are fully detailed, as are all the other design elements. This radiant Gem is also spared the small black grease stains seen on so many survivors, and displays an absolute minimum of microscopic alloy spots - most not visible to the unaided eye. The lustrous surfaces and pleasing rose-green coloration complete a very pretty picture indeed!"
"This is a coin that will surely stand as one of the most desirable Type Three Twenties in existence," concluded Halperin.
