The Harold W. Anderson Collection to Anchor Heritage's June 2004 Long Beach Signature Sale

Dallas, TX: Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc. will be offering Part One of the Harold W. Anderson Collection in its June 3-5, 2004 Long Beach Signature Auction, the Official Auction of the Long Beach Coin Expo.

"Mr. Anderson," said Heritage President Greg Rohan, "was raised in a proud but Depression era family. He was hooked on coins after his aunt gave him a bag of coins she picked up at the U.S. Mint for his seventh birthday. He went to work early in his life; one of his first jobs was delivering flyers to homes for which he earned 10 cents per hour, which he spent buying coins. From his earliest experiences buying, selling, and studying, he learned what differences in quality meant. He considered himself a dealer by the age of nine, as he bought and sold nearly every coin he owned in the process of upgrading. This trait of seeking perfection characterized his lifelong collecting activities. By the age of twelve, he was placing small ads to sell or trade coins, and by thirteen be began to branch out of Hartford in search of better coins - and bigger deals. He never stopped searching for higher-graded American rarities. His collection is noted for its extraordinary breadth in quality rare coins, all with abundant eye-appeal."

According to Mrs. Anderson, his wife of forty years, "Quality was at the heart of his search, and was the enduring theme of his ever-growing collection. He was known to be 'too picky' by several dealers, and his files contain letters from several complaining of his insistence on quality. 'Andy' (to his family and friends) was certainly ahead of his time in being so selective. For him, his collection grew 'coin by coin,' personally selecting every coin to improve his set, always acquiring the best coin possible. I became his coin-collecting partner, and I assisted him in finding the coins he wanted to bid on at auction or in the catalogs. I loved to see his eyes light up when he found the 'right piece' to add to his life's work."
