Description

1873 Open 3 Shield Nickel, Untoned MS66
Superior Strike and Eye Appeal

1873 5C Open 3 MS66 PCGS. The 1873 Open 3 Shield nickels are found only on the circulation strikes of this date, while the proofs are found with both numeral styles. The Open 3 coins are a bit more elusive grade-for-grade than their Closed 3 business strike counterparts. This gleaming Premium Gem is untoned silver-white and shows some unfinished areas at the bottom of the shield stripes. The strike and eye appeal are far superior to most examples of this date. There are artifacts of metal under the date digits that have made some experts (such as Walter Breen) believe in an 1873/2 overdate, although it is not recognized by any of the leading grading services. Population: 11 in 66 (3 in 66+), 0 finer (12/15).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 276C, PCGS# 3800, Greysheet# 2876)
