Description

1836 Reeded Edge Half Dollar, MS62
Historic Steam Press Issue, GR-1

1836 50C Reeded Edge, GR-1, R.2, MS62 PCGS. CAC. Dusky silver-gray toning embraces this coruscating and unworn example. The strike is full and the fields display only minor marks. The obverse rim is wider than the reverse rim. The reeded edge 1836 half dollar is famous as the first variety of its denomination to be coined by the Mint's recently installed steam press. The mintage is traditionally listed as 1,200 pieces, but the number of survivors (typically in Fine to AU grades) suggests that the actual production was much larger. Nonetheless, the variety is both popular and historic, and seldom encountered in Uncirculated condition. Population: 12 in 62, 13 finer (11/15).
