Description
1857 Flying Eagle Cent, PR64 Cameo
Snow-PR2, Type of 1856
1857 1C Flying Eagle PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Snow-PR2. The
Snow-PR1 and -PR2 dies are known as the Style of 1856 for their
"boxy" obverse letters, most obviously the interior of the O in OF,
which is rather squared-off rather than round as on the Style of
1857 dies. Snow writes that these dies were probably produced from
the same undated hubs as the 1856 Flying Eagle cents but dated
1857, and may thus be the "first regular issue small cents." These
proofs are rare, and Cameo examples such as this near-Gem PCGS
example far rarer still. The surfaces here show much blond-tan
color with daubs of orange and lilac in the fields. There are no
mentionable die cracks, marking this as a strike from early-stage
dies. The squared-off rims, needle-sharp detail throughout both
sides are every bit as expected from this attractive and high-end
proof, which also shows contrast in abundance between fields and
devices. Population: 10 in 64 (1 in 64+) Cameo, 5 finer. CAC: 3 in
64 Cameo, 4 finer (1/16).(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 227B, PCGS# 82040, Greysheet# 81158)
