Description

1818 B-9 Quarter, VF20
Rare Die Variety

1818 25C B-9, High R.5, VF20 PCGS. CAC. The 1818 B-9 quarter is a middling rarity within this high-mintage date, the first issued since 1815 and one of 10 die varieties known for the year. The obverse of this variety is easily identified by three dentils beneath the first 1 being quite close together, as well as by the spur from star 2. A double dentil appears on the reverse (a die shared with the 1818 B-7) below the C in the denomination, whose 25 leans rightward. This is an earlier die state than the famous late stage where bold arrow die clashes show above Liberty's head. The surfaces of this midgrade circulated coin show gray-blue patina outlining the rose-gray devices, creating an attractive "circulated cameo" appearance. Minor scrapes and bumps are consistent with the grade but none in themselves overt. A hefty vertical die crack runs though the left upright of the N in UNITED. An exceedingly attractive example of this rare variety. For the B-9, Population: 1 in 20, 1 finer. For the date, CAC reports 11 in VF20 and about six dozen finer (3/16).
