1912-S Lincoln Cent, MS66 Red
Exceptional Registry Set Candidate

1912-S 1C MS66 Red PCGS. From a smallish mintage of 4.4 million pieces, the 1912-S Lincoln cent is a scarce, semikey issue in this popular series. Most of the mintage was released into circulation and few examples were saved by contemporary collectors, perhaps due to difficulties in ordering Uncirculated specimens directly from the San Francisco Mint that year. At least one prominent collector, Commodore Eaton, had his request for coins refused by the Superintendent of the Mint, who informed him that "one-cent pieces may be distributed only upon an order from the Treasurer of the United States or an Assistant Treasurer." The Mint's policy on providing collector coins seems to have been inconsistent in the early 20th century, and may account, at least in part, for the elusive nature of the 1912-S in high grade today.

The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem, with impeccably preserved original red surfaces and vibrant mint luster on both sides. The design elements are sharply detailed and eye appeal is terrific. Population: 3 in 66 Red, 0 finer (3/16).(Registry values: N2998)
