1872 Two Cent Piece, MS66 Red and Brown
Tied for Finest at PCGS
1872 2C MS66 Red and Brown PCGS. The two cent denomination
was unwanted and unnecessary in the national economy by 1872. Only
65,000 business-strike examples were struck that year, the final
regular-issue mintage of the series. After a proof-only mintage the
following year, the denomination was discontinued. The 1872 is an
elusive issue in all grades and the acknowledged key to the
regular-issue series today.The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem, with sharply detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster throughout. The original red surfaces have mellowed to light crimson in some areas, mostly on the reverse. No mentionable distractions are evident and eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 2 in 66 Red and Brown, 0 finer (3/16).(Registry values: N2998)
