Description

1907 Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS67
Arabic Numerals, Tied for Finest
Major Condition Rarity

1907 $20 Arabic Numerals MS67 PCGS. The High Relief 1907 Saint-Gaudens double eagle was a relic of numismatic artistry, and many of the examples struck were saved for numismatic purposes or for the pure joy of ownership. The low relief, Arabic numerals version that was struck for the remainder of the year was much less cherished, and most high-grade examples survived merely by chance. The High Relief is rare in MS67, but the Arabic numerals variant is rarer still. And unlike the High Relief, which is extremely rare but at least known to exist in MS68 and MS69, the Arabic numerals 1907 Saint is unknown finer than the present numeric level. A pair of MS67+ PCGS coins are arguably finer than the present piece, although one would be hard-pressed to differentiate them from this example with respect to visual display. This coin showcases virtually flawless fields and sharp, unabraded devices. Mint-fresh, frosty luster adorns the surfaces, captivating the viewer's eye. A second and third look are required to single out the few unobtrusive ticks that can be used for pedigree tracking. This is a coin whose quality and eye appeal are obvious, even blatant, at first glance.

The last PCGS Superb Gem we offered was in lot 4611 of the Central States Signature sale (Heritage, 4/2013), which realized $47,000. The present coin is worthy of a comparably strong bid. Population: 18 in 67 (2 in 67+), 0 finer (3/16).(Registry values: N1)
