1793 Chain Cent, VF25
S-1, AMERI.
1793 1C Chain, AMERI., S-1, B-1, R.4, VF25 PCGS. Sheldon-1
and its abbreviated AMERI. reverse legend is a distinctive Guide
Book variety within the coveted Chain cent type. A popular
mintage estimate for this variety is 6,350 pieces, most of which
has been lost to attrition. Surviving examples are often heavily
worn and environmentally impaired, with relatively few pieces known
in XF and finer condition. The present coin is a well-detailed VF
coin with a notably strong reverse and clear obverse legends. The
surfaces are deep burgundy-brown with scattered small ticks and
marks. No corrosion or obvious granularity is seen, although a few
small bumps are detected around the obverse rim. Finding a visually
pleasing S-1 coin in the VF and lower grades is challenging, with
the present piece among the finer examples recently seen at
