Description

1916 Buffalo Nickel, PR67+
High-End Registry Set Rarity

1916 5C PR67+ PCGS. CAC. As made possible by its paltry 600-coin mintage, the 1916 matte proof Buffalo nickel is the scarcest issue in the proof series. Most surviving representatives reside in the PR64 to PR66 range. This high-end Superb Gem is conditionally rare, and finer coins are far out of reach for most collectors. It is the first Plus-designated PR67 we have offered, and the added CAC green label further heightens its appeal. The last CAC-endorsed PR67 PCGS coin we offered was lot 3655 of the Summer FUN Signature sale (Heritage, 7/2014), which realized $8,812.50. The last PR68 coin we offered was in lot 1004 of the Houston Signature sale (Heritage, 12/2008), which realized $43,125. This in-between PR67+ CAC PCGS coin should command strong bidding at auction.

The strike is full, and the matte luster gives each side a lovely, subdued glow. Sun-gold toning yields interior tinges of sky-blue and violet, delivering outstanding eye appeal. There are no bothersome abrasions. Population: 32 in 67 (2 in 67+), 7 finer. CAC: 11 in 67, 1 finer (4/16).(Registry values: N2998)
