1802 50C O-101, T-1, R.3, MS60 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 1/1. A single die pair produced 29,890 half dollars in 1802, resulting in one of the great Mint State rarities of the early Bust half series. A challenging issue even in circulated grades, the 1802 half dollars were stalwarts of domestic commerce, and nearly the entire mintage circulated heavily. The master dies were the same for 1801 and 1802 half dollars. The 1802 shares the same reverse as the scarce 1801 O-102 half, with the base of A in AMERICA embedded in the wing feathers. It is the only die pair for the year.

This Uncirculated representative displays lightly mottled olive-gold, rose, and slate-gray iridescence, through which traces of satin luster shine at most angles. The impression is nicely centered on both sides, and the central features are crisply detailed. There are no adjustment marks on either side. With just two other certified Mint State coins known, this example ranks high on any Condition Census of 1802 half dollars -- a coin that would be a centerpiece of any Bust half collection. Auction catalogs have long touted the rarity of this issue in high grades, although it remains underrated even today. No other date from the early series 1794 to 1807 shows fewer Mint State representatives on the combined population reports. Repeat ... none! Population: 1 in 60, 1 finer (4/16).
