Description

1837 Reeded Edge Half, MS66
Finest GR-22 Example

1837 50C GR-22, R.2, MS66 PCGS. Pearlescent silver luster glows beneath a soft-gray patina with reddish-gold accents at the margins of this appealing Reeded Edge half. The coin is sharply struck at the centers, although diagnostic die fatigue causes weakness in some of the stars and at the cap. Likewise, the tops of CE in CENTS are weak from peripheral die wear.

The GR-22 variety is known for subtle die clashing, seen on this coin beneath Liberty's chin and at the peak of the right (facing) wing. Weakness at the reverse dentils suggests a late die state. Dick Graham's 2012 reference lists the Condition Census for the variety, with two MS66 coins at the top of the six "finest known," although Steve Herrman's Spring 2016 census suggests that this exact coin is the sole finest of the variety. PCGS lists six pieces at this MS66 level with one finer coin for the 1837 issue without regard for the variety (5/16).
