Description

1856/56-O Seated Liberty Half, MS66
Finest WB-103 and Tied for Finest of the Issue

1856-O 50C Repunched Date, WB-103, Die Pair 15, R.3 MS66 PCGS. CAC. An original, lustrous Premium Gem with the 56 in the date recut north, while the undertype is sharply visible below the upper serif of the 5 and below the knob of the 6, identifying the WB-103 variety. Well-detailed with bright silver luster beneath the natural, smoky-gray toning, the coin shows fleeting highlights of champagne-gold and no mentionable distractions even under close inspection with a loop. It is the finest certified specimen of the WB-103 by far -- appropriately CAC endorsed -- and, importantly, this 1856-O is tied as the finest-known at either service regardless of variety. We expect lively competition from series specialists when the lot is called. Population (all varieties): 3 in 66, 0 finer. CAC: 2 in 66, 0 finer (4/16).
