Description

1871 Five Dollar, MS61
Mintage 3,200 Pieces

1871 $5 MS61 PCGS. The surfaces are semireflective, a frequent state for higher-end half eagles from this issue of just 3,200 business strikes, and Liberty's well-defined portrait even shows a hint of frost. Pale yellow-gold surfaces show a scattering of small to moderate abrasions, but the devices are generally clean and overall eye appeal is pleasing for an MS61 coin. The 1871 half eagle's circulation strikes were not saved in any great quantity and Mint State examples such as this are great rarities. PCGS has certified only two other examples as MS61 with none in MS61+ or finer grades (4/16).
