Description
1796/5 Half Dime, MS63
Rare V-2, LM-2 Die Marriage
Outstanding Original Color
1796/5 H10C V-2, LM-2, R.6, MS63 PCGS. Remnants of a 5
beneath the 6 in the date identify LM-2. This is the rarer of the
two 1796 half dime varieties. The 1796 as a date is seldom seen in
high grade, and the overdate variety is rare across the spectrum.
PCGS has slabbed only 23 examples in all grades, 11 of which are
designated Mint State. The R.6 rarity rating in Logan-McCloskey
seems slightly high according to modern certification numbers, but
the fact that this die variety is universally rare remains
unchallenged. The present Select Mint State example is softly struck on the central portrait and the eagle, but the eye appeal is nonetheless pleasing. The stars, dentils, and wreath are sharp, and the surfaces display satiny luster. Original lavender-gray, gold, and sea-green hues appear concentrically over each side. The reverse fields have a hint of reflectivity. Population: 3 in 63, 2 finer (6/16).
