Description

1802 Draped Bust Half Dollar, AU50
O-101, T-1, Only Dies for the Date

1802 50C O-101, T-1, R.3, AU50 PCGS. CAC. Tompkins Die State 1. A nominal mintage of 29,890 Draped Bust half dollars was accomplished in 1802, with a single die variety known for the date. The dies feature a large high date and 12 arrows in the eagle's claw on the reverse. The 1802 is a better date in the series and high-grade specimens are very rare.

This attractive AU specimen is sharply detailed in the centers, but shows a touch of the usual softness on the eagle's head and some flatness on the obverse star centers. Just a trace of actual wear is evident and abrasions are minimal, but some planchet adjustment marks are visible on the shield and upper reverse. Vivid shades of champagne-gold, lavender-gray, and cerulean-blue toning blanket the pleasing surfaces, with original mint luster underneath.
