Description

1798 Large Eagle Dollar, AU58
B-30a, BB-116, Pointed 9, Late Die State

1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Close Date, B-30a, BB-116, R.5, AU58 PCGS. Ex: Miller. Bowers Die State VI. The Bowers Encyclopedia plate coin for BB-116. Among the finest of the variety, listed in the second position on the Bowers list of Notable Specimens. The strike is razor-sharp on Liberty's upper curls and at the star centers, with some weakness on the central field stars above the eagle's head due to die bulge. Slight wear from brief circulation joins a few light lines and abrasions on both sides. Mint luster remains in the form of tawny-gold toning at the margins merging beneath blue and deep-lilac shades across the central motifs.

The late die state is represented by a bold die crack from the rim through the first A in AMERICA to the nearby wing feathers. On this example, the crack is bold but less "bloblike" than other late-state coins. Both sides are deeply struck with prominent rims and dentils, although the reverse is minimally off-center northeast. The eye appeal is exceptional.
