Description

1799 B-10, BB-163 Dollar, AU58
Late Die State, Semireflective Fields

1799 $1 7x6 Stars, B-10, BB-163, R.2, AU58 PCGS. Ex: Miller. Bowers Die State IV. The Bowers plate coin for the latest die state of BB-163. An available variety in lesser grades, yet Mint State and near-Mint coins are scarce for the die pair -- a fact that suggests the coins were well-used in commerce. This example displays a translucent sheen of russet-gold toning over brightly lustrous, semireflective silver surfaces.

The strike is remarkably sharp given the near-fatal state of the reverse die. Multiple die cracks criss-cross the margins. The O in OF shows an internal cud from intersecting die cracks. A few faint adjustment marks run across the shield from the eagle's left (facing) wing. Only the high points of the portrait and the eagle's breast feathers show actual wear from circulation, along with infrequent small marks and lines visible with a lens.
