Description
1854-S Type One Gold Dollar, MS64
First Year of the New California Mint
1854-S G$1 MS64 PCGS. CAC. Struck in the first year the San
Francisco mint opened, Garrett-Guth theorize gold dollars were
produced as "a relief to handle when compared to a pinch of gold
dust." It must have been only a moderate relief as a mere 14,632
gold dollars were struck this year. The primary focus of the new
mint was on double eagles, of which 364,866 pieces were produced.
Few gold dollars are known today in near-Gem or finer grades. This
is a bright yellow-gold example that is fully struck in all areas.
There are a few small abrasions scattered over each side, but none
that are singularly mentionable. Population: 8 in 64, 2 finer
(7/16).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25C2, PCGS# 7527, Greysheet# 8070)
