Description

1799 Silver Dollar, B-18, BB-154, AU53
Much Luster Remains

1799 $1 7x6 Stars, B-18, BB-154, R.4, AU53 PCGS. Ex: Miller. Bowers Die State IV. Mottled golden-gray toning does not diminish the nearly complete mint luster that remains on this briefly circulated dollar. BB-154 is the second-rarest die pair of the many 1799 varieties, exceeded only by the BB-151 Irregular Date pairing. Multiple die cracks occupy the reverse circumference, all of them in an advanced state and quite spectacular. As one would expect, the reverse die life was short and it was used to strike the BB-154 only. The gleaming silver surfaces suggest a finer grade, while central weakness of strike contributes to the assigned About Uncirculated designation. An exceptional coin for the variety specialist.
