Description

1865 Two Cent, MS66+ Red
Radiant Pumpkin-Gold Surfaces

1865 2C Plain 5 MS66+ Red PCGS. The two cent denomination was introduced in 1864, when 19.8 million pieces were struck. Mintages declined for eight consecutive years before the series was abandoned in 1873. The 1865 is the second date in the set with the second-highest mintage (13.6 million coins). Examples survive through MS66 Red but are nearly unseen finer. (We last offered an MS67 Red coin in 2005). This radiant pumpkin-gold would be exceedingly difficult to upgrade, with needle-sharp detail on the shield, leaves, and wreath, and minimal carbon spotting. Clash marks and die cracks on noted on each side. Population: 49 in 66 (2 in 66+) Red, 1 finer (8/16).
