Description
1841-O Seated Half, MS66
WB-101, Tied for Finest Certified
1841-O 50C Large O, WB-101, Die Pair 6, R.4, MS66 PCGS. The
date is shifted noticeably to the left. Struck from the only use of
both the obverse and reverse dies. Like many early New Orleans
dates, the Mint's mantra regarding dies seemingly was, "if it ain't
broke, don't use it." This coin is a case in point, with a long die
crack spanning edge-to-edge from 2 to 6 o'clock.Exceptionally well-struck and attractive for the issue, this lustrous Premium Gem displays full details on the devices and colorful iridescence across virtually mark-free surfaces. Coppery-peach shades are surrounded by olive-gold toning at the rims, with occasional blue and lilac accents. Struck from a late die state confirmed by the diagnostic die crack through M of AMERICA through the right wing to the dentils below F in HALF. This piece is the sole finest at PCGS. We know of only one other MS66 (at NGC) and none finer. PCGS population: 1 in 66, 0 finer (8/16).
