Description

1870-CC Silver Dollar, Choice AU
Lightly Toned, Ample Luster

1870-CC $1 AU55 PCGS. OC-2, R.5. Despite a significantly lower mintage, the first-year Carson City dollar is less rare than its half dollar counterpart. But at least 95% of survivors are circulated, with examples certified at the major services in all grades between AG3 and MS64. The present piece is much nicer than most '70-CC dollars, since luster accompanies design recesses, and the surfaces retain their caramel-gold and pearl-gray "skin." The obverse field exhibits distributed minor marks. OC-2 is identified by two diagnostics: the base of the 7 in the date is centered over a dentil, and a diagonal die line emerges from the dentils below the left foot of the L in DOL.(Registry values: N2998)
