Description

1842-D Two and a Half, AU55
Fewer Than 100 Survivors Known

1842-D $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Variety 3-F, with the date recut at the bottom. Boasting a small mintage of 4,643 pieces, the 1842-D quarter eagle is understandably scarce in all grades. Doug Winter estimates that as few as 85 to 105 pieces are extant, complementing the PCGS population report, which notes "under 100 known." This issue is unknown in Mint State at PCGS, and NGC has seen four heavily abraded submissions in Uncirculated condition. The present Choice AU PCGS coin displays a bold strike with yellow-gold surfaces and hints of reflectivity in the fields. A small strike through on Liberty's neck truncation should not be mistaken for an abrasion. Light handling marks in the fields hardly detract from the visual appeal. Population: 8 in 55, 5 finer (9/16).
